Stornoway council workers

Comhairle in internet porn investigation
Published in Stornoway Gazette Thursday 22nd September 2005

An investigation is underway after council workers at the Comhairle were found to have downloaded Internet pornography on their computers.

The ‘Gazette’ has learned that disciplinary action is being taken following the discovery, although no members of staff have yet been dismissed.

It is understood that computers were seized and their hard drives examined following the allegations.

Nigel Scott, the Comhairle’s communications officer, refused to confirm where in the Comhairle the alleged offences had taken place.

He did, however, stress that there was to be no police involvement in the Comhairle’s enquiry.

“The material which was downloaded was not illegal and did not involve children,” he said.

Although it was not confirmed how many members of staff had acted inappropriately, Mr Scott said the numbers were ‘relatively small’.

The Comhairle were not yet able to confirm whether credit cards had been used in accessing the pornography, but it was stressed that no public money could have been used.

Mr Scott also refused to confirm claims that a member of staff at the Western Isles Library had been relieved of duty due to a similar incident several weeks ago.

He added: “In any huge working enviroment, such as the Comhairle, things like this happen from time to time. All Internet usage is monitored, and the Comhairle is taking appropriate action.”

Employees downloading pornography at work has not been uncommon in recent years.

Three Edinburgh City Council employees were suspended from duty after they were caught reproducing pornographic DVDs and CD-ROMS on local authority computers.

Mobile phone network Orange sacked up to 40 workers after an internal investigation reportedly revealed they were downloading and distributing pornography from Internet sites.

And an e-mail attachment depicting cartoon characters Bart and Lisa Simpson in a sexual position led to the sacking of ten staff at the Liverpool offices of Royal & Sun Alliance.

Again just a thought, we wonder if it is the same council workers that were so ready and happy to condemn us innocent victims of the Lewis gate fiasco
